March through May brings temperatures that are warm but genuinely comfortable — typically ranging from 18°C to 25°C — without the intense heat of high summer. The countryside is at its most lush and green, the wildflowers are out, and the light has a softness and quality that is simply beautiful to work with. April and May in particular are close to ideal for outdoor ceremonies. The days are long enough to allow for a relaxed timeline, the evenings are warm and pleasant, and golden hour comes at a civilised time — late enough for dinner to be done, early enough for everyone to still be fresh and full of energy. The Grand Harbour looks extraordinary in spring light, and the gardens at venues like Villa Arrigo and Villa Bologna are at their most beautiful. Spring also tends to be slightly quieter than the peak summer months, which means venues are more available, and the island itself is less crowded. For outdoor portrait sessions — whether a pre-wedding shoot or the portraits on the day itself — spring gives the most consistently beautiful conditions.
Summer (June–August) — Peak Season for a Reason
Summer is peak wedding season in Malta, and it's easy to understand why. The days are long, the sky is almost guaranteed to be blue, and the light in the evening hours is extraordinary. For couples who want certainty — who need to know there will be sunshine — summer delivers that more reliably than any other time of year. The trade-off is heat. Midday temperatures in July and August regularly reach 35°C or above, and for anyone dressed in formal wedding attire, that can be genuinely uncomfortable. The practical solution is to structure your day around the temperature: ceremonies in the late afternoon or early evening, portraits at golden hour when the heat has dropped and the light is at its best, and celebrations that run into the cooler night air. Evening weddings in the Maltese summer are genuinely magical. The sun sets late, the light turns extraordinary shades of amber and gold, and by the time dinner begins the temperature has dropped to something entirely pleasant. Autumn (September–November) — Malta's Best Kept Secret
September and October are, in my experience, genuinely underrated by couples planning their Malta wedding. The summer heat has softened but the temperatures are still warm — September averages around 28°C, October closer to 23°C — and the landscape takes on a golden quality as the season progresses. The island is less crowded than in July and August, the venues are slightly more available, and the light has a depth and richness that I find particularly beautiful to photograph in. The golden tones of the Maltese countryside in autumn — dry stone walls, terracotta earth, amber fields — photograph extraordinarily well. There's a warmth to the whole island that feels different from spring's freshness and summer's intensity. November brings a slightly higher risk of showers and more variable weather, but it also brings dramatic skies and a quality of light that can be genuinely stunning. Winter (December–February) — Quiet, Intimate, and Underestimated
Winter weddings in Malta are quieter, more intimate, and honestly more beautiful photographically than many couples expect. December through February brings the highest risk of rain — though "high risk" by Maltese standards is still low by northern European ones — and temperatures drop to a mild 12–16°C range. Venues are significantly more available, often at better rates, and the whole experience tends to feel more personal and less production-line than the busy summer season. Winter light in Malta is something I genuinely love working with. It's softer, more directional, and has a dramatic quality that summer's harsh midday sun simply doesn't offer. Overcast winter skies act like a giant diffuser, creating even, flattering light throughout the day. And when the sun does break through in winter — particularly in the late afternoon — the low angle and warm colour temperature produce images of extraordinary beauty.
